I feel an enormous wave of gratitude as I write my very first blog post for the new HMF website. I’ll start by thanking you for taking the time to check it out. In today’s fast-paced world, there are so many other things you could be doing with your time, but you have chosen to use it with me. I appreciate you.
My intent is to update you both personally and professionally and share some of my most recent learning lessons. To those who I have never met: Welcome and Hello! I look forward to connecting with you soon and helping you in any way that I can. To those who I already know on any level: I am back. So please enjoy the new HMF!
1) Who are you?
I am Helen Marie Fox, a health and performance coach based out of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I started my first business when I was in elementary school selling friendship bracelets. I found my messy cost-volume-profit analysis in my parents’ home a couple of years ago… until then I had completely forgotten all about it. Entrepreneurship is the development of a business from the ground up — coming up with an idea and turning it into a profitable business. Who knew my little mind was already at it back then? Even at eleven years old, I knew I loved to connect; I truly enjoyed helping others get what they want.
In 2009 I turned my passion for helping others into Helen Marie Fitness, a personal training and wellness coaching business. Fueled by results, we quickly grew a referral-based business that spanned beyond Canada, and I eventually entered the world of coaching and consulting. Now heading into our 8th year, we have changed the name and tweaked our focus slightly to accommodate our growing clientele in a way that maximizes our ability to serve others at the highest possible level. It’s been an amazing journey that I continue to walk (and sometimes sprint). You can read more about me here.
2) Where have you been?
Although I have been working with clients for almost a decade, in some ways I feel like I have been on a two to three year sabbatical. A few years ago I shifted into a deeper place of learning and discovery. I decided to slow down and identify just exactly how I wanted to show up in the world. I adopted a more focused approach with my business, I started writing, I got back into real estate investing, and I started another business. I began travelling at least once a month to learn, grow, and just be. Although I was happy with my previous successes, I started working with more and more mentors so that I could achieve a level of success beyond what I had ever reached. I decreased the amount of time I was working IN the business and started working ON the business while investing more in myself than I had ever done before. In the mix, I also got married to an incredible man and chiropractor who shares my desire for health, high performance, and an on/off lifestyle. We both believe in the work hard play hard mentality and continue to challenge each other daily.
As we kick off a brand new calendar year, I’m excited to ignite change in more and more individuals as I myself continue to learn and grow daily. A special shout out to all HMF clients (present and former): it is through you that I am inspired to be better in all that I do; thank you for the opportunity to serve. And to my entire HMF crew (past and present): thank you for your partnership, patience, support, and friendship. You have given me the ability to help, teach and grow.
3) What have you learned?
Here are some of my favourite lessons that I have picked up in recent years:
- Slow down and be present. Life is too short to be busy or rushing (this just in from a recovering workaholic – it can be a gift and a curse to love what you do).
- Alignment is key. Make sure you’re clear on your goals, that they are aligned with your heart, and that your expectations and actions also line up. Choose your distractions wisely.
- There is always a better way. Know that there is probably someone out there with your same situation handling it a lot better (never give in to pity parties). There is also someone out there with your same situation that is probably handling it a lot worse (don’t compare yourself to that person; you will become complacent).
- You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with, so choose your surroundings wisely.
- Be careful how you think. Think different. Be different. Train your mind to be cautious every time you find yourself going along with the masses.
- Dabbling is dangerous. Read Gary Keller’s “The One Thing”.
- Most skeptics and cynics are really just scared. And stress is a code word for fear (Tony Robbins). Be open, be grateful, and strive for courage and resiliency. Seek excellence, not perfection and keep on going! Never give up.
4) What’s changed?
In addition, to helping people achieve great levels of health and fitness, we are now offering integrated high performance coaching to help individuals and groups apply themselves at an even higher level. It is my belief that to be optimal with your finances, relationships, career or personal goals, it is important that you are not overweight, exhausted, burnt out, or waking up 2 to 3 times a night.
Early in my personal training career, I intuitively knew that “how you do anything is how you do everything” (T. Harv Eker). Later, while studying how the mind works, my research confirmed what I had seen in my clients for years: the same things that were tripping them up in the gym or kitchen were also getting in their way in other areas of their lives. When we began to focus our energy on the concept of creating change and building better habits everywhere, results went through the roof. To truly achieve high performance, one needs to know what to do, how to do it, AND be in the right state of mind to produce the desired result. We’ve been able to combine all three so that results are truly maximized for the client and overall peak performance can be achieved. I absolutely love helping people feel unstoppable (in and outside of the gym).
5) How do I know if HMF is for me?
You know when you hit that frustrating moment where you know that you could be doing better? And for whatever reason you have allowed things to takeover your life that should not be taking over? Although others may think you’re doing well, you know that you are less than optimal and not at your potential. It could be your body, your career, your money, your relationships, or all of the above… something is off and you want to be operating on all cylinders. We facilitate the necessary conversations, insightful meetings, or coaching or training sessions that will kick you into action and help you produce a desired result.
Imagine you at your best; almost anything would be possible. I estimate that only a small percentage of people are really playing all out. We pride ourselves on helping those people get to where they want to go. If you want to be at your best and develop a successful mindset that will move you from point A to point B every time, then HMF is for you. Let’s make it happen.
